As the chimes of the church announced four o’clock, a dedicated group of Amherst citizens gathered at the library with a historical purpose. Within the hour a time capsule would be sealed for fifty years. For the past two years Amherst County has been a part of the Jamestown 2007 project. Rebec Vineyards dedicated two years of Garlic Festival tee-shirt designs to Jamestown Themes; “Godspeed Garlic” and “Pocahontas, Queen of the Garlic Festival.” The items chosen to be interred in the time capsule included the most recent design of Pocahontas and the 2007 FOG newsletter. When told of his involvement, the shirt’s creator, Jon Roark jokingly replied, “I'll have to be 104 to be around when it is opened. I'll probably still be doing t-shirts!”
In the crowd Niki Kanev, son of our winemaker and Kendreanna Crawford, little sister through the Big Brother Big Sister organization to our tasting room manager, got to place the last items in and witness the sealing of the capsule. “I put in a folder of special papers!” exclaimed Kendreanna. The most exciting part for her was decidedly “…knowing that I’ll be able to come back when they open it.”
Rebec has been apart of Amherst’s history for over twenty years. Join us in making history. Rebec Vineyards is located between Lynchburg and Charlottesville, Virginia on Route 29. Tastings are held daily from 10am-5pm.
The winter plunge, a time when the sunshine’s rarity, portrays the hibernating bear, as brilliant. Many wineries imitate this mammal’s seasonal habits, closing doors to tasters during these slow, cold months. In sleepy Amherst County, however, Rebec Vineyards is buzzing with activity. Pictured is Svet Kanev, winemaker and Ron Banks, his assistant, steadily bottling the highly-demanded Sweet Sofia.
Not only is Rebec vigorous with production, the tasting room and gift shop remain open from 10am-5pm daily all year long! Don’t spend this winter hibernating, visit Rebec Vineyards, located on Route 29, in between Charlottesville and Lynchburg, VA.
